New Student Frequently Asked Questions

— COVID FAQ’s —

Special rules during the COVID pandemic.

How do the online classes work?

Xcelerate has been approved by the WA State DOL to conduct web based, instructor led classes.  Web based training classes will count towards the state-required classroom sessions.

All classroom sessions are being held online at least through the Summer, but possibly longer depending on our state government’s decision for how large “gatherings” can be.

Classes are “live”.  The days/times you sign up for are when your class will meet online.

Your student will need a Zoom account to participate.  If your student does NOT have a Zoom account. One can be created at Zoom.us for free. (Look for the orange button.)

We have set up our Zoom account to be very safe.  We send out invites and students have to register for each class.  We do not use the camera for the students, just a “chat” feature.  We also have it set up to where the students cannot chat among themselves, only with the instructor.

When can I get my permit?

You will need to “pre-apply” for the permit on the DOL website in order to register with us.  (this process takes about 5-10 minutes, no documents or payment necessary)  We will need your WDL# from your pre-application. You will get an email about 2 weeks before your class is set to begin with next step info.

Once you get the email that states your “permit waiver” is ready to be used, you can obtain the permit.

At this time, all DOL offices are closed for walk-in customers, you must make an appointment.  Appointments are hard to come by (1 or 2 months out, depending on location).

So the DOL has approved issuance of Non-Photo Permits online!**  You will be able to log into your student’s DOL License Express account to get your student’s Instruction Permit.  (state rules are that the soonest you can get the permit is 10 days before class starts)  The DOL charges $25 for the Instruction Permit.

**Non-photo permits work the same as a regular permit.  This just means that when it’s time to get the Driver’s License, you will need to go into a DOL office to get your picture at that time.

What is the status of course drives?

We have been approved by the DOL to do course drives with students as long as we follow certain COVID precautions.

  • A mask is required. You must supply your own.
  • The office will not be open for waiting, please be outside either your own car or the office (socially distanced) so your instructor can find you at your drive time.
  • We will be sanitizing cars between drives.
  • If you have any cough/fever/sneezing, let us know and we will cancel your drive with no fee.

What is the status of observations?

During the “state of emergency” that is currently in place, the 1 hour observation requirement has been suspended.  When the “state of emergency” has lifted, this requirement will be reinstated.

What if my schedule changes and my class schedule doesn’t work anymore?

If you sign up for a class that works for you currently but your schedule changes while classes are still going on (ie: school starts back up, sports resume, etc.) we will be very flexible and help you reschedule what you need to complete.

Registration and Payment

How do I register for a course?

You can register on the location schedule pages above. (Bothell: purple buttons, Kirkland: red buttons)

How do I sign up with a friend to get the discount?

There is a spot during registration that asks you for the names of your friends. Make sure all friends note each other’s names. Sign-up with a friend fees are valid only if the friend(s) are signing up for a course beginning in the same calendar month and names are mentioned during the registration process. If the friend does not end up registering, we will need to bill you for the difference. If a friend signs up after you have registered, we will refund you the difference.

Who qualifies for the Sibling Rate?

Any student whose sibling went through our program previously and/or any 2 or more siblings signing up at the same time.

Do you offer a payment plan?

Yes, we do.  Please email Jill@XcelerateDriving.com to request details.

** Course completion confirmation will not be entered into student’s DOL record until balance is paid in full.

What is your refund policy?

If you decide to cancel your enrollment prior to the first day of class we will provide a full refund. If you decide to cancel your enrollment within the 1st week of class and prior to the 3rd week of class, only 50% of tuition will be refunded. No refund if a permit waiver has been issued. Any monies not refunded can be put toward a different course in the future.

Permit info

What is a state of WA ID/WDL#? Why do I need it and how do I get it?

This # is the number issued to you by the state of WA that follows you through your licensing process; it becomes your permit # and then your driver’s license #. It is 12 digits long.  This number will be in one of the following formats:

1)  Starting with the first 5 (five) letters of your last name, ex:  LASTNFN123AB

2)  Starting with the letters WDL, ex:  WDLABCD123YZ.

Some customers already have a WA State ID card (usually obtained for use as ID when traveling out of the country.) If so, the PIC # from that card is the number that we need. (It will also be one of the two formats above)

If you do not have an ID card with this number, you will need to “Pre-Apply” on the state of WA Dept of Licensing website. (There is a yellow button on top of the homepage of our website that says “Click HERE to Pre-Apply for a WDL#”). Here is a link as well: https://secure.dol.wa.gov/home/serviceType.aspx#  This process takes about 10 minutes.  PRINT your Pre-Application document and put in a safe place.  You will need to bring this document to the DOL with you at permit time.

We will need this number in order for you to register for a Driver’s Ed course.

When can I get my permit?

You must be 15 years old and register (and pay) for a course.  The soonest you will be able to get your permit is 10 days before your course begins.

Do I get my permit from Xcelerate?

Only a state of WA DOL office can issue permits and licenses. The driving schools supply the DOL with waivers and test scores. Parent and student will need to go to the nearest DOL office together to obtain the permit.

Do I need my permit by the first class?

We request that you have your permit by no later than the 3rd classroom session in order to keep up with the course timeline.
